Along side the hobbyist part of our business, the best and most gratifying thing we do here is our annual August "Summer Against Hunger" fundraiser for CARE.
This year contributions from The Cable Company, and our vendors, customers, and an anonymous donor totaled $35,555.35, a 15% increase from last year. CARE has arranged 5:1 matching funds from the European Union (thank you!) yielding total program donations of $213,332.10.
Thanks to all of you who participated in this fundraiser by making a purchase in August. For every one dollar you spent with us in August, even on used products, at least $.60 is being donated to CARE. For purchases of our sponsoring vendors' products, it is actually $1.20. Yes one dollar for your audio purchases in August gets a $1.20 contribution for humanitarian causes - well done!
Our contribution this year is being earmarked by CARE to support a a community-based program for disaster preparedness and response in Bangladesh in the vulnerable floodplains of three major rivers. This area is particularly susceptible to disaster and climate change. (Some will argue whether climate change is man-made, or what we should be doing about it, but no one denies that it is happening, and that the impact on flood-prone areas is particularly dramatic.)
